Vitaloop Review

Overview
Often times filter bottles are a pain to use.  Straw filters can require more suction to work properly.  GRAYL's press-style filter works well, but it requires a significant amount of force to work.

Vitaloop has an interesting solution by building a battery-powered pump into the lid of the bottle.  TheBy letting a pump do the work for you, many people will find this bottle is easier to use than GRAYL's press-style design (and it's also less awkward to use in public places).  It also removes more impurities than straw filters like Brita's.

So if you're a traveling professional, backpacker, or prepping for emergencies, this bottle is certainly worth considering.

Why Buy?
  • Powered Filter Pump: This is the first bottle we've seen with a built-in filter pump that does the work for you.  You fill a flexible plastic pouch with unfiltered water, which then screws into the lid.  Then you fit the hard plastic bottle over the flexible one and screw it into the lid too.  When you press the button on the lid, the pump forces water from the flexible pouch, through the filter, and into the clean Tritan plastic bottle.
  • Rugged Design: The bottle feels very durable and well-constructed.  The plastic build is strong and dent resistant.
  • Many Ways to Carry: There's a 3-finger handle, a carrying strap, and an included carabiner to give you many options on how you'll take this bottle with you.
Picture
Why Avoid?
  • Short and Long-Term Cost: The bottle is expensive.  Add in the cost of filter replacements, and this is one of the the most expensive bottle systems you can buy.
  • More Parts to Clean: While it's not necessarily difficult to dissasemble and reassemble, it still leads to more parts and surfaces that must be cleaned.  See Vitaloop's FAQ for more info.
  • Durability: The bottle itself feels very durable and is made of Tritan plastic, so that will hold up well.  Our main concern is with the lid, and anything with electronics makes us more likely to question how well it will hold up, especially against accidental drops on the lid.  To be fair, this is speculation, and to this brand's credit, the bottle feels very durable, well-designed, and premium.

Vitaloop Filter Bottle FAQs

  • Are Vitaloop bottles dishwasher safe? | No, Vitaloop recommends handwashing their bottles and air drying the filter.
  • How do you store a Vitaloop filter? | Filters should be air dryed before being placed in storage to prevent mold.
  • Are Vitaloop bottles worth it? | There are very few bottles on the market that offer the same kind of filtering power as Vitaloop's design, and the ease-of-use compared to straw filters or press-filters makes it a great choice for traveling professionals.
  • Are Vitaloop bottles leak proof? | Yes, they are leak proof if properly sealed.
  • Are Vitaloop bottles easy to clean? | Not compared to other bottles.  There are simply more parts, and there are electronics and filters to consider.
  • Are Vitaloop bottles insulated? | No, they do not have dual-wall vacuum insulation.
  • Are Vitaloop bottles durable? | The bottle portion is made of Tritan plastic, which is very durable and dent resistant.  The top portion feels very well designed and constructed, though anything with electronics makes us more concerned for long-term durability, especially if the bottle is accidentally dropped on its lid.
  • How long do Vitaloop filters last? | Vitaloop recommends replacing the filter after 60 gallons or every 3-4 months of use.  Read their FAQ here.
