S'well Review
Overview
S'well emerged around the same time as other major brands like YETI and Hydro Flask, offering a more aesthetic design, and many consumers were immediately drawn to it. The sleeker design was in stark contrast to YETI's utilitarian look, making S'well bottles more of a statement piece.
In addition to aesthetics, S'well takes insulation very seriously. The narrow mouth with their Original bottles coupled with lid designed for insulation combine to make this our best-tested bottle yet. Our test measures the amount of time it takes the water in the bottle to drop from 165 to 150 degF, and while most average bottles like YETIs and Hydro Flasks are around 70 minutes, our S'well Original 25oz bottle clocked in at 225 minutes, almost 3 times better. There are certainly some drawbacks like the lack of a handle, but if you want the best insulation possible in a great-looking bottle, S'well could be good choice. |

S'well FAQs
- Are S'well bottles dishwasher safe? | No, S'well recommends handwashing the bottle.
- Are S'well bottles safe? | Everything we have seen indicates that S'well's bottles are safe, or at least just as safe as other comparable bottles on the market.
- Are S'well bottles worth it? | They are quite expensive for their size, but if you're looking for excellent insulations and a more aesthetically-pleasing bottle, then S'well bottles can be worth it if they're within your budget.
- Are S'well bottles easy to clean? | No. This bottle has a very narrow mouth opening, making it difficult to clean. You'll likely rely more on soaking the bottle and using Bottle Bright tablets like the ones shown below under Recommended Accessories.
- Are S'well bottles BPA-free? | Yes, S'well bottles are made with BPA-free materials.
- Do S'well bottles contain lead? | We have not found an official statement or test that shows whether or not S'well uses a lead-based solder. This type of seal is fairly standard across this industry outside of a few notable exceptions like Owala and Hydro Flask. We submitted an inquiry and received the response, "all S'well products that are manufactured and sold by Lifetime Brands, Inc. comply with federal standards and California Proposition 65 requirements relating to lead and other contaminants." The answer does not specifically answer the question of whether they use a lead-based solder. We assume that S'well would say clearly say they do not use lead if that was the case, so it is likely that S'well uses a lead-based solder but we are not certain. However, even if S'well uses a lead-based solder, realistically there is an extremely small probablility that you would ever have an issue with lead unless your bottle was severely damaged, and in that case you would likely need a new bottle anyways because the insulation is probably lost and the bottle would be very dented and wobbly.
- Do S'well bottles fit in cupholders? | This bottle is a borderline size. We recommend measuring your cupholder's width and compare it against the dimensions on S'well's website or on our Stat Sheet below. If you need an adapter, consider getting our BottlePro Max.
