A Glass Bottle with Vacuum Insulation? (JustOneBotl Review)

Insulated Glass Bottle (JustOneBotl Review)
Insulated Glass Bottle (JustOneBotl Review)

Is JustOneBotl Good?

This is hands down one of the more interesting bottle on the market because it has a glass inner that fits inside a vacuum insulated stainless steel outer.

Technically it can be used as two separate bottles, but it's really the way they fit together that sets this option apart because you get the pure taste of drinking from glass with better insulation and protection that comes from stainless steel.

I've mentioned it a few past videos, and judging by some of the comments, a lot of you guys are interested.

So today, let's take a deeper dive to look at JustOneBotl to see what's good, what's bad, and if it lives up to it's name.

Disclaimer
Technically this is a sponsored post, but I legitimately think this is a cool concept. The bottle itself could use a few improvements like the design of the spring loaded lid (you'll read more about these in a bit), but overall it's a great option for both insulation and glass.

It's also from a small business, and sometimes it feels good to buy from a company like that instead of one like YETI.

What Comes with JustOneBotl?

Glass Inner Bottle

First let's look at what you get.  It comes in a box that looks like this, and there are a lot more parts compared to most bottles.  In fact, right away there's a bit of irony in the name because you actually get two bottles.

Each unit includes:
  • One stainless steel bottle that holds 22 ounces
  • One borosilicate glass one that holds 15 ounces that fits inside the steel one
  • Bottle boot that goes on the bottom of the steel bottle
  • Various seals and gaskets to centralize the glass bottle inside the steel one

  • Spring lid without the modular spout (sip from glass, and a silicone seal on top that prevents plastic contact with your water)
  • Small twist lid (screws onto the glass bottle)

Insulation Test

JustOneBotl Cold Insulation Test
JustOneBotl Cold Insulation Test
I did a cold water insulation test versus an Ello glass bottle, a YETI Rambler, and a S'well Original.

As expected, JustOneBotl placed in the middle.

It's not as good as YETI or especially S'well, and that's probably because of the lid design and because of this threaded connection in the middle.  But it's way better than a simple glass bottle, so it's clear that the stainless steel housing really does help.

Drop Test

JustOneBotl Drop Test
JustOneBotl Drop Test
You have all of these bumpers and pads that help centralize and protect the glass bottle, but of course it's still glass so I had to do a drop test.

I dropped it from about waist-height both empty and full of water, and in both cases the glass survived.

That being said, it probably wouldn't do as well dropping it on the lid and I haven't test that yet because I want to do some other things with this bottle first, so keep that in mind.  Also, the bottom of the steel bottle did dent some despite the bottle boot, but that's expected with just about any steel bottle dropped from this height while full of water.

What's Good about JustOneBotl?

Vacuum Insulated Glass is a Cool Concept
Vacuum Insulated Glass is a Cool Concept
The Concept
Honestly, the coolest thing is the innovative concept that gives you both the benefits of glass and insulated stainless steel.  Maybe you prefer drinking from glass at home.  For many people, it just seems to taste a little better compared to stainless steel or plastic.

Some of that may be mental to some degree kind of like a placebo effect, but in many ways perception is reality and regardless of the reason, that's why many people prefer drinking from glass.  But glass is just not great for traveling because it breaks so easily and there's really no insulation.  This bottle does the best job out of any other bottle on the market at combining the benefits of glass and stainless steel.

There are some other similar options that I haven't tested.  The main one is The Modular Bottle, which has a glass interior with a plastic outside.  I'd imagine that layer of air trapped inbetween helps with insulation a bit but not nearly as much as a vacuum.
Two Lid Options Avoid Plastic Contact with your Drink or Mouth
Two Lid Options Avoid Plastic Contact with your Drink or Mouth
Avoiding Plastic Contact
Some other good things about JustOneBotl are that it does a better job than most bottles of preventing plastic contact with your drink or mouth.  The best option for this is to use the small lid that fits on the glass bottle because it has stainless steel under the lid and you're drinking from the glass rim.  The next best option is the chug lid because you're still drinking from the glass rim, and the glass presses up against this silicone seal.  Both of these options completely prevent plastic contact with your drink or mouth.  The other options like using the modular spout or straw lid are not as good for this reason.
Supporting a Small Startup
Supporting a Small Startup
Small Company
And this last reason is something that may not resonate with everyone, but personally I prefer ordering from smaller startups whenever possible instead of huge brands like YETI or Owala.  As someone who runs my own small businesses, I tend to have a soft spot for these kinds of companies and entrepreneurs because I know from experience how incredibly challenging it can be.  But from a customer service standpoint, you'll probably get help from the owner instead of an AI chatbot, which is something I've found particularly frustrating with Owala.

What's Bad about JustOneBotl?

With all of that in mind, this is certainly not a perfect bottle so let's look at what's not so great.
Tries to Do Too Much
Tries to Do Too Much
Too Many Parts and Uses
Number one, honestly, it feels like the bottle is trying to do too much.  There are so many parts, options, and configurations to the point that it feels overwhelming.  I think a lot of people would rather just have one bottle that works perfect for their ideal situation without having to worry about.
Spring Lid can Open Without Pressing the Button (you can switch the lock to prevent this though)

Needs Some Refining
Number two, some of the pieces need to be refined, particularly how they all fit together.  This is most noticeable with how the chug cap can pop open without pressing the button, and you may end up locking it each time to make sure it doesn't accidentally open.
More Parts = More Cleaning
More Parts = More Cleaning
More to Clean
Number three, because of all the parts and how they all fit together, there are more things to clean.
Small Glass Volume (15oz)
Small Glass Volume (15oz)
Small Glass Bottle
And number four, the glass is a pretty small volume and has a narrow mouth opening, so you're probably looking at adding chilled water or crushed ice, and it won't be enough water to last you a full day so you'll want to use it when you have access to easy refills.

Should You Get JustOneBotl?

Honestly, it depends on what you're looking for.  If your primary goal is to avoid plastic contact and you prefer drinking from glass, this could be a good fit.  It's really the only option I'm aware of that gives you both glass and vacuum insulation while also avoiding plastic contact with your drink or mouth.

Planned Improvements
Planned Improvements
Just keep in mind all the drawbacks because some of these are significant.  One thing worth noting is that I've spoken with the owner, and he's fully aware of these drawbacks and is taking them into account for his next version.  This includes having a larger glass bottle and a simplified design with fewer parts and no loose seals so things are easier to keep track of.
