GRAYL GeoPress Review

Picture
Overview
GRAYL may not be widely-known to the general public, but it is very well known within certain niche groups, including backpackers and survivalists.  What started as a Kickstarter campaign has become a major niche brand that's available in many stores and on Amazon.

Rather than using a straw filter, you press down on the bottle, which forces water through a filter cartridge.  This press filter (or "French-press style filter") removes more contaminants than simple activated carbon straw filters from other brands like Brita according to our tests and what we have seen from GRAYL.

If you'll be traveling, camping, or any other situation where you will need to drink from a questionable water source, GRAYL is one of the better options available on the market, if you can afford the price.

Why Buy?
  • Press-Style Filter: The system includes an outer housing that you scoop up or pour bad water into.  The bottle itself has a filter cartridge on the bottom and a spout cap on top.  You insert the cartidge-end of the bottle into the outer housing, open the lid to let air vent, then press down on the bottle, which forces water through the cartridge and into the bottle.
  • Rugged Design: The bottle feels very durable and well-constructed.  The plastic build is strong and dent resistant.
  • Anti-Slip Base: The bottom rim of the bottle has a silicone grip, helping keep the bottle from moving while you're pressing down on the filter.
Picture
Why Avoid?
  • Short and Long-Term Cost: The bottle is expensive, especially the 24oz titanium version.  Add in the cost of filter replacements, and this is one of the the most expensive bottle systems you can buy.
  • More Parts to Clean: While it's not necessarily difficult to dissasemble and reassemble, it still leads to more parts and surfaces that must be cleaned.  See GRAYL's FAQ here.
  • Handle is Small: The handle feels strong and durable, so it's good for clipping to a bag.  But it's not great for holding it. compared to wider ones like Hydro Flask's design.
  • Durability: The bottle itself very durable, and the plastic construction means it should resist dents and damage better than stainless steel.

GRAYL GeoPress Filter Bottle FAQs

  • Are GRAYL bottles dishwasher safe? | No, GRAYL recommends handwashing their bottles.
  • How do you store a GRAYL filter? | First, perform a dry-press by pushing the filter down without any water in the outer housing.  Then remove the one-way silicone valve, and make sure you give the filter at least a few days for the filter to dry.  We recommend reading GRAYL's full directions here, and reach out to them with any additional questions.
  • Are GRAYL bottles worth it? | There are very few bottles on the market that offer the same kind of filtering power as GRAYL's design, so if you will not have access to safe water, then GRAYL bottles can be worth the investment.
  • Are GRAYL bottles leak proof? | Yes, they are leak proof if properly sealed.
  • Are GRAYL bottles easy to clean? | Yes and no.  They are relatively easy to disassemble, though certainly there are more steps than with other bottles.  The filter requires certain steps for cleaning and storing that you can read more about here.  We highly recommend getting a bottle brush kit (see below under "Recommended Accessories" for the one we use).
  • Are GRAYL bottles insulated? | No, they do not have dual-wall vacuum insulation.
  • Are GRAYL bottles durable? | Yes, they are made of plastic or titanium, and both options will be more durable and dent-resistant than stainless steel.
  • How long do GRAYL filters last? | It depends some on the quality of the water that passes through the filter, but they can filter at least 65 gallons in most cases.  See GRAYL's FAQ about it here.
