Brita Filter Bottle Review

Picture
Overview
Brita has long been a trusted brand when it comes to water filtration at home, and more recently they started offering water bottles with built-in straw filters as well.

They have stainless steel and plastic versions, but both use the same straw filter.  It's an easy-to-use design, and it's not too restrictive.

It's primarily advertised to remove chlorine, odors, and bad tastes. It's worth noting that Brita does not officially mention that this filter removes other common contaminants, such as microplastics or PFAS.  The filter may provide some benefit and is likely better than no filter at all, but it should not replace a more extensive filtration system like reverse osmosis.

Why Buy?
  • Built-In Filter: The filter is easy to remove and replace, and the straw and housing for the filter are also easy to remove for cleaning.  This is one of the easier filter bottles to use and maintain, much more so than more extensive filters like GRAYL's filter-press design for Vitaloop's built-in filter pump.
  • Good Insulation: For a bottle and brand that primarily sell filters, this bottle performed better-than-expected on an insulation test we did to compare all the bottles in our collection.
Picture
Why Avoid?
  • Long-Term Cost: The filters are an on-going expense that will add up over time.
  • More Parts to Clean: While it's not difficult to dissasemble and reassemble this lid, it still leads to more parts and surfaces that must be cleaned.
  • Narrow Mouth: The mouth opening is narrow enough to make cleaning with a brush and adding ice more challenging than comparable wide mouth bottles.
  • Handle is Small: The flexible handle is not as wide as other similar ones, such as Hydro Flask's design.
  • Durability: The bottle itself feels very durable, and the handle is flexible so it shouldn't break easily.  However, we have read numerous reviews from people who said the open/close mechanism for the lid and spout cover have broken over time, and Brita does not currently sell the lid by itself so the customers had to buy new bottles.

Brita Filter Bottle FAQs

  • Are Brita bottles dishwasher safe? | No, Brita recommends handwashing their stainless steel straw filter bottles.
  • Are Brita bottles worth it? | While it does not provide the most extensive filtration against contaminates like PFAS and microplastics, this is one of the easiest bottles to use for light-duty filtering.  If your primary goal is to have water that is free from bad odors, taste, or chlorine, this is a good option to consider.
  • Are Brita bottles leak proof? | Yes, Brita's bottles are leak proof as long as the seals are clean and correctly installed.  If your Brita is leaking, check the seals and make sure the lid is completely closed.
  • Are Brita bottles easy to clean? | Yes and no.  The straw and filter are easy to disassemble and reassemble for cleaning, but the narrow mouth design makes it more difficult to clean the bottle itself, particularly since it is not dishwasher safe.  We highly recommend getting a bottle brush kit (see below under "Recommended Accessories" for a good one that also includes a straw cleaner).
  • Are Brita bottles insulated? | Yes, as long as you get the dual-wall stainless steel version.  Brita's plastic bottles are not insulated.
  • Are Brita bottles durable? | Yes, to an extent.  Stainless steel is strong, but the bottle will dent if you drop it.  Also, the flexible lid shouldn't break.  However, we have read reviews from several customers who said the open/close mechanism on the spout cap broke over time.
  • How long do Brita bottle filters last? | Brita's straw filters are rated to last for 2 months or 40 gallons.  If you fill up your 32oz bottle twice per day, then the bottle is filtering 1 gallon every 2 days.  That means the 2-month limit is reached before the 40-gallon limit. Based on that usage, each Brita filter should last you 2 months.
  • How much do Brita bottles cost per year? | Assuming the 2-month replacement schedule from above, you'll use 6 filters per year.  Check the current price of Brita's 6 packs here.
